Magnolia grandiflora - Southern Magnolia (Tree), Evergreen Magnolia
BESTSELLER (rank 19) - To clarify the question of whether the neighbor has recently started to grow a rubber tree in the garden, we can help: it is much more likely that it is a Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) with its large, rubber plant-like, glossy leaves. The trees, shrubs or standards are hardy enough to be planted permanently in the garden. In mid-summer, they show intensely fragrant, large, elegant, white flowers. Real garden stars, in other words!
Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) with its white, silky flowers of up to 25 cm (!) across is a feast for the eyes, and the fragrance of its white flowers also a delight for the nose. We offer plants cultivated from cuttings that already blossom after 3 to 4 years. The stunning flowers are followed by cone-shaped fruits with eye-catching, red seeds. Southern Magnolia develops a dense, pyramidal crown. Its sturdy leaves, which at first glance resemble tropical rubber trees, are shiny dark green on top and covered with a brownish-red felt underneath. This double coloring makes the evergreens year-round gems: in the garden as well as in cool winter gardens or large planters where they spend the summer outdoors. It is a rather hardy plant that can be planted in a partly sunny, wind-protected spot in the garden where it prefers a constantly moist, loamy, low-lime soil. For a successful cultivation of Southern Magnolia it is important that the evergreen leaves receive sufficient moisture through the roots even in winter. For this reason, they should be protected from the drying winter sun by shading them in exposed areas during periods of permanent frost.
Quality: huge flowers with intense fragrance; attractive, glossy, bicolored foliage; pyramidal & compact growth habit; evergreen
Use: planted in the garden (with sun protection in winter); in large planters outdoors with winter protection or overwintering indoors; all year round in an unheated or cool greenhouse or conservatory
