Magnolia grandiflora - Southern Magnolia (Shrub)
You have recently seen a rubber tree at your neighbor's house? Much more likely, it's an evergreen magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) with its large, gum-like, glossy leaves. These plants are hardy enough to be planted permanently in the garden. In midsummer, they produce intensely fragrant, large, white noble flowers.
Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) with its white, silky flowers of up to 25 cm (!) in diameter is a feast for the eyes but with its intense fragrance also a pleasure for the nose. We provide plants cultivated from cuttings or live stakes that already blossom after 3 to 4 years. The impressive flower is followed by a cone-shaped multiple fruit with eye-catching, red seeds. Southern Magnolia develops a close, pyramidal crown. At first sight, its sturdy leaves look similar to tropical gum trees. On the upside they are glossy dark green, underneath they are covered with a reddish-brown felt. This double coloring makes the evergreens year-round gems: in the garden as well as in cool winter gardens or large planters where they spend the summer outdoors. It is a rather hardy plant that can be planted in a partly sunny, wind-protected place in the garden where it prefers a constantly moist, loamy, soil deficient in lime. For a successful cultivation of Southern Magnolia it is important that the evergreen leaves get sufficient moisture through the roots also during winter. Therefore, they should be protected from the drying winter sun by shading them in exposed places during permanent frost phases. Quality: Giant flowers with intense fragrance; attractive, glossy, double-colored leaves; pyramidal & compact growth habit; evergreen
Use: Planted in the garden (with sun protection in winter); in big containers all-year outside with winter protection or wintering indoors; all-year in an unheated or cold greenhouse
