Malpighia glabra - Barbados Cherry, Acerola
Known as the fruit with the highest vitamin C content, Acerola (Malpighia glabra) guarantees you a yearly harvest of the little red delicacies: Acerola cherries are ready for picking within 4-6 weeks after the pretty pink blossom to boost your immune system.
Because of its bright red fruit, the Barbados Cherry is nowadays cultivated beyond its natural habitat in all subtropical regions of the world (Southeast Asia, India, Brazil, etc.), which is reflected in its many names: Antilles Cherry, Puerto Rico Cherry, Barbados Cherry, Jamaica Cherry, and many more. 100 g of its sweet-bitter fruits contain 2 to 4 g of vitamin C, which is more than 20 times as much as in oranges. The vitamin content is highest in unripe fruits and decreases rapidly after reaching full ripeness. That is why it is important to enjoy them fresh. The 2-3 cm large, round, glossy red Acerola cherries are also rich in magnesium and potassium and thus true pick-me-ups. Even in this country, a good harvest is guaranteed: the fruits ripen within one month after the pink flowers which open during summer and are pollinated by insects. For producing fruits no second plant is required and even young plants with an age of 3 to 4 years bear fruits. On top of it all, these small growing and well branched shrubs look very pretty and are very tolerant to pruning. Depending on temperature and light in winter, they keep the entire shaped light-green leaves or may as well drop part of them.
