Ravenala madagascariensis - Traveller's Tree, Traveller's Palm
The Traveller's Tree or Palm (Ravenala madagascariensis) has paddle-shaped leaves, which are accurately aligned 90° to the trunk and look like a mix of bananas and birds of paradise, with which the Traveller's Tree is actually related. It has magnificent, large, birdhead-like, creamy white flowers.
The feature that distinguishes the Travelers' Tree (Ravenala madagascariensis) from Giant Bird of Paradise and Bananas is the arrangement of its leaves. The banana like leaves are arranged on long stalks and give the entire plant an appearance of a huge fan, attracting a lot of attention in high conservatories, living rooms and offices. The unusual name comes from its capacity to hold water in the leafbases, which are said to have saved the lives of many a thirsty hiker. In our country, there is no need for this, but we enjoy the decorative tropical leaves and eye-catching growth of these evergreen banana and ginger relatives. Older plants produce green-yellow flowers. While Traveler's Trees are very common in the tropics, they are rarely cultivated in our country.
