Morus rubra - Red Mulberry
The mulberries of the Red Mulberry Tree (Morus rubra) are not always red when fully ripe, but also dark purple in color and have a juicy-sweet taste. Snacking directly from the tree in May and June does not go unnoticed: the fruit juice intensely colors the fingers, but washes off very easily.
The Red Mulberry is native to Canada and North America and is also known as "American Mulberry". Unsurprisingly it is very hardy (-20°C) and absolutely suitable for the garden. The name Red Mulberry refers to the color of its blackberry-like fruits. When fully ripe, however, these are not crimson but dark red and can hardly be distinguished from black mulberries. The taste is also identical. On the other hand, the crowns of Red Mulberry are broader and higher than those of Black Mulberry and their multiform, rough leaves are larger. What is the same again are the same willow catkin-like, yellowish, self-fertile flowers in May and June and the harvest, which extends over many weeks in July and August (for further information see Black Mulberry).
