Cestrum nocturnum - Night Blooming Jasmine, Queen of the Night, Night Jessamine, Lady of the Night
The intense fragrance in the evening and at night make the cream colored flower tubes of Night Jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum) our absolute favorites among the scented plants in our assortment. Extra plus: attractive glossy leaves, vigorous.
Although it is commonly called ‘Night-blooming Jasmine’, these intensely fragrant shrubs are not jasmine at all but belong to the Solanaceae family. In the summer and late summer months its clusters of yellow-white, tubular flowers release a sweet perfume in the evening and at night. It is a very strong perfume- but never too strong. Unlike the fragrance of hyacinth, for example, which can easily become too heavy, with these flowers you will always look forward to the intoxicating fragrance when the night falls. The scent is not easy to describe, some compare it to peach blossoms, others to chewing gum, we find it is unique and multifaceted like a perfume consisting of many secret components. Night-blooming Jasmine is a fast growing plant and is happy in partially shaded spots, e.g. in the shade of other tub or conservatory plants, especially as this is the best place to meet their need for water and prevent the roots from overheating. Depending on the amount of light and warmth available, a (large) part of the leaves fall off in winter. The annual new shoots begin with rising temperatures from April/May.
