General information to Protea:
South African Proteas don’t make it easy for producers and owners to grow them because these plants demand high standards of cultivation. In return, they fascinate with flowers that one would like to preserve forever. Protea usually grows in a bushy habit with an informal, loosely branched shape. They naturally are evergreen but in our climate often drop a good part of their leaves. When cultivated in a pot or wintergarden, a well draining, sandy soil poor in nutrients is essential for a long life of this exclusive plant. The soil should have a pH-value of 4 to 6 and it should be always kept constantly moist on a low level. The roots never must dry out. The best spot for a Protea is a sunny but not too hot place with permanent movement of the air. Protea originates from open mountainsides and is not used to smothery and humid air. The fertilizer must be free of phosphate.
