Caesalpinia gilliesii - Yellow Bird of Paradise, Dwarf Yellow Poinciana

The flowers of Bird of paradise (Caesalpinia gilliesii; former: Poinciana) surely is one of the most exotic ones amongst the world of container plants and greenhouse plants. All over the world these attractive shrubs decorate gardens and parcs when in July and August large yellow clusters of flowers rise above ornamental leaves. Long red stamen protrude from every funnel-shaped flower. Caesalpinia gilliesii needs a constant water supply on medium level. However, this slow- growing, deciduous plant with its unformal crown is a very tolerant plant. It survives short periods of temperatures below 0° C and can stay on a sunny balcony & terrace until the first frost. In a - heated or unheated- greenhouse, too, this South American plant will feel fine. Caesalpinia gilliesii drops leaves in autumn and can be wintered in a quarter with only little sunlight. It therefore is a plant for a wide range of situations.
