Silk Trees (Albizia julibrissin) with their delicately fragrant flowers are attractive exotics for the garden. Long stamens make the flowers look like a pink powder puff. The colorful, aromatic blossoms often attract bees and butterflies to the garden. The bi-pinnate leaves, which move at the slightest breeze and create multi-faceted light shows, give the trees an elegant appearance in the garden or front yard. At night or in case of drought, the leaves fold up; by day they unfold again and offer a shady place to relax. Albizia julibrissin grows in the garden as well as in an unheated or cool conservatory. Their hardiness is demonstrated by two Silk Trees in Frankfurt Palmengarten (Germany), where the trees have developed a beautiful umbrella-shaped crown. The basis for successfully growing a Silk Tree in the garden is a well-drained, sandy to gravelly and humus-rich soil. Loamy soil may cause root damage due to waterlogging. In the first few years after planting, it is advisable to shade the trunks with jute or fleece to protect them from bark cracks and to cover the root area with foliage. Once Silk Trees are established, they will add exotic flair to your home.
