Eucalyptus gunnii - Cider Gum Tree
The most commonly grown Eucalyptus species in Europe, the Cider Gum Tree (Eucalyptus gunnii) bears ovate to rounded young leaves and elliptical or widely lanceolate adult leaves with a cough drop aroma. As is typical of Eucalyptus, growth is rapid, resulting in single to multi-stemmed trees. Because of its cold tolerance, this species is suitable for use in gardens in milder locations.
Eucalyptus are very fast-growing and thirsty plants, which are used worldwide for agro-forestry. For the cultivation as ornamental plants in a pot or in the winter garden, a constant and rich water and fertilizer supply is essential - Eucalyptus in the garden must be watered in summer and winter (!!) in dry spells. In return, Eucalyptus pleases you with decorative leaves that add an exotic touch to your garden and an aromatic fragrance that keeps the air clear and clean. Thanks to the essential oil, insect pests have no interest in the firm and coarse leaves: plant protection is usually not an issue with Eucalyptus. Although Eucalyptus Trees are vigorous growers, this should not keep owners of small winter gardens or greenhouses from buying one of the many species: they are all very tolerant of pruning and can be trimmed to the desired size every year in late winter.
Quality: aromatic leaves; slender crown; fast-growing; evergreen
Use: from April/May to October outdoors in pot gardens (balcony, terrace, garden)
