Cercidiphyllum japonicum - Katsura Tree
The heart-shaped, brightly colored leaves of the "cake tree" (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) emanate a scent of fresh yeast cake in autumn. A delicious treat for those looking for an unusual but hardy woody plant for the garden!
In late summer the leaves of Katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) produce an interesting scent, resembling gingerbread cake or burnt brown sugar. At the same time, it shows its autumn foliage in bright yellow, orange and pink: a pleasure for both eyes and nose. The new leaves in spring appear in a flashy copper colour. This deciduous plant, however, usually grows multi- stemmed and not with one single stem, as one might expect of a tree. These unusual shrubs are very hardy and can be planted in the garden or they can grow as pot plant throughout the year outside or in an unheated greenhouse. In all cases, it needs permanently moist soil. Otherwise it will drop its leaves.
Quality: intensively fragrant & brightly colourful autumn leaves; intensely branched & dense crown; robust & hardy
Use: planted in the garden; in large pots thoughout the year outdoor - or during winter in the house; all year in an unheated or cool greenhouse
