Citrus clementina - Clementine
If you like to eat citrus fruits straight from the tree, you will be delighted with a Clementine (Citrus clementina). This is because clementine fruits are very easy to peel and contain no seeds. Their small, but extremely numerous flowers are wonderfully fragrant. The shrubs themselves grow nicely compact with a dense green foliage.
Clementines are a citrus fruit hybrid between Mandarin (C. reticulata) and probably Bitter Orange (C. aurantium). These usually thornless varieties are named after Father Clemente Rodier from Algeria, who lived at the end of the 19th century. Even without pruning, Clementines grow very compact and are densely leafed. Their leaves are slightly broader than those of mandarin trees, but still narrow compared to oranges or lemons. The flowers are about 1.5-2.5 cm in diameter, very numerous, white and intensely fragrant. The main bloom is in spring (April/May) or fall (October/November) over a period of 4 to 6 weeks. The fruits are a real treat, as they contain few to no seeds. The orange peel of the fruit is easily removed. The flesh is somewhat less aromatic than a mandarin, but very juicy and very sweet. By the way: The name 'Tangerine' with varieties like 'Dancy' refers to a subgroup that originated in the USA as a brand name and is still widely used today.
