Citrus unshiu XXL - Satsuma

Satsuma (Citrus unshiu) originates from Japan and misleadingly is often assigned to the group of Tangerines and Clementines. Although having much in common with these, there are some subtle distinctions: its leaves are distinctly broader than the Tangerine’s, its crown is still very compact, however, a little more unformal than Tangerine and also thornless. The weight of fruits often bends the branches at their ends. The flowers are small (1-1.5 cm), very numerous and have a typical sweet - dry fragrance . The fruits grow larger than Tangerines, especially because even after ripening they continue growing. With their intense to dark orange peel the fruits stick to the tree for a very long time, even when in late autumn ( October/ November) they have reached full ripeness already. The fruit segments are hardly connected with the peel so that Satsumas can easily be peeled. Satsumas tolerate cold and even short-time frost, however they can -in our opinion- not be wintered outside in our country.
