Pinus pinea - Italian Stone Pine, Umbrella Pine
With their umbrella-shaped crowns and elegant needles, Umbrella Pines (Pinus pinea) are beautiful Mediterranean ornamentals for all gardens north of the Alps, because the evergreen character trees are tolerant of frost and can be planted out permanently.
Sitting in the shade of a Stone Pine Tree and breathing in the spicy smell of its 15-18 cm long, dark green pine needles is among the most beautiful experiences you bring back from a Mediterranean vacation. With a Stone Pine in a pot, conservatory or planted out in the garden, this Mediterranean feel can be created at home with only little effort. Stone Pines grow vigorously and quickly even on poor (sandy) soils. As they age, the broad crowns grow upwards and form the typical space requiring umbrella shape. If you wish you can speed up the process by removing one or two of the lowest rows of branches each fall. In order to avoid the crown to grow too broad for the pot plant you can shorten the young shoots by 2/3 in spring, before young needles start to grow. Pruning back into the old wood is not recommended, as there will be hardly any new shoots there. Although Stone Pines are drought tolerant, they grow most beautifully and densely when they are constantly and abundantly supplied with water, particularly when grown in containers.
