Cercis siliquastrum - Judas Tree, Love Tree
Popular in the Mediterranean as an avenue and park tree, you are certainly not committing a betrayal when you plant a Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum) with its heart-shaped leaves and clusters of pink flowers in the garden!
The Judas Tree gives away its secret showing its heart-shaped, bright-green leaves and spectacular spring bloom. Its bright pink, pea-like flowers grow in dense clusters directly from the branches and stem - a rare phenomenon known as cauliflory. The flowers open before the leaves and the spectacular display is visible from far away, making the Judas Tree a beautiful ornamental tree. Interestingly, the flowers have a delicate aroma and are eaten and used for decorating dishes in Mediterranean countries. These deciduous trees get more and more popular – both as classic container plant, in a conservatory or even in the garden, because frost is not an issue for them. Judas Trees can either grow shrub-like with several main stems or as small trees with one single stem. The crown is often as broad as it is tall. In the garden, they appreciate sunny spots in well-drained, stony-sandy soil. Lime tolerance is good. The common name Judas Tree comes from the myth that Judas hung himself from a Cercis siliquastrum, a tree that in biblical times was widely spread in the area of Jerusalem. Today, the Judas Trees are widespread in the Mediterranean region not only in parks and gardens, but due to the large number of brown, flat pods they have also run to seed.
