Flowering Dreams

The fragrance of this lesser known Yellow Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum asiaticum) is equal to that of its white-flowered cousin; its flowers are light yellow and, in our experience, it can tolerate a few more degrees of frost before its leaves turn red for protection, then green again in spring.

Description

The fragrance of the Yellow Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum asiaticum) with its light yellow flowers is just as intense as that of its white-flowered relative (T. jasminoides) and its clouds of perfume take you to the world of the Orient. The reddish-brown shoots with evergreen leaves are superb at scrambling up on trellises, or can be used as ground cover in beds. There, even in the shade, Star Jasmine forms dense carpets that do not allow weeds to grow up. Since Star Jasmine grows slowly but steadily, regular pruning is not necessary. Occasionally, you should direct the shoots to the trellis and fasten them. Like White Star Jasmine, also Yellow Star Jasmine can be planted in the garden if you protect the evergreen shoots from the winter sun. So far, we have even noticed a slightly higher cold tolerance of the Yellow compared to the White Star Jasmine.
