Papedas, also known as Kaffir Lime, are native to Southeast Asia (Sumatra, Philippines, Malay Archipelago). Today, the name Papeda is favored, as the old-fashioned term "Kaffir" carries a discriminatory connotation. Its distinctive characteristic are the glossy, dark green double leaves, which look like two leaves joined together. The branches spread horizontally from the stem, the crown is arranged in tiers. The bloom is mainly in spring and fall with rather small (up to 2 cm) white flowers that stand together in dense clusters. Typical for the fruits, which are about 5-9 cm in size and slightly pear-shaped due to a short "neck", is their wrinkled peel. In tropical growing areas the peel remains green, in our country, however, it usually becomes yellow due to the temperature difference between day and night. The pulp contains only little juice, but is aromatic. In Asia, the oil-rich, grated peel is used more frequently than the inside, as it repels bugs (e.g. mosquitoes, fleas, etc.) when applied to the skin. The leaves are used to flavor dishes. Like sweet and sour limes, Papedas are happy in warm places sheltered from the wind. When young, Papeda plants don’t develop a dense crown, but this can be improved by pruning. Older plants, however, have a well branched and often picturesque tree crown.

Use: in pots from April/May outside on balcony, terrace and in the garden - during winter in a winter quarter or conservatory; all year round in a heated greenhouse or bright room
