Bougainvillea glabra 'Sanderiana' - Bougainvillea
Bougainvilleas are legendary for the brightness of their bracts/flowers. They flower in spurts 3-4 times per summer. If you find it difficult to choose one of the brilliant colors, start with the robust, purple-flowered species Bougainvillea glabra 'Sanderiana'.
Purple-flowered Bougainvillea glabra 'Sanderiana' and red-flowering Bougainvillea glabra 'Californiana' are absolute classics in container and winter gardens. They are more robust than the Bougainvillea spectabilis varieties in red, yellow or white (also available from Flora Toskana) and can survive wintering temperatures between 5 and 15 °C. Their abundance of flowers and duration of flowering is equal to Bougainvillea spectabilis hybrids, but their bracts are somewhat smaller. In view of the abundance of flowers, however, this does not matter. When grown as slender climbers or pruned into round globes, the full bloom almost completely covers the narrow leaves. Care tip: Pruning the thorny shoots is possible at any time, even in summer, when individual branches exceed the desired crown shape or length.
Quality: intensely colored perennial bloomers, vigorous, Mediterranean climbers or pruned as shrubs/standards
Use: from May outside on balcony & terrace; all year round in heated winter gardens
