The Pohutukawa trees (Metrosideros excelsa) are native to New Zealand where they bloom around the turn of the year and are therefore referred to as New Zealand Christmas trees. In this country these evergreen shrubs with gray leaves show their exotic flowers usually from June to August as clusters of bright red, brush like flowers. These form a beautiful contrast to the silver gray, velvety leaves and shoots. Pohutukawa trees do not like permanently wet soil but are otherwise easy to care for. Due to their enormous adaptability, Pohutukawa trees are suitable for being planted in pots on a terrace or planted out in the conservatory or as specimen plants in the room. Moreover, they can be easily trimmed into a round shrub or lollipop shaped tree. This should convince even the last skeptic of the versatility and ease of care of these New Zealanders.
