With the orange variety 'Sanguinello' (Citrus sinensis) not only the flesh is intensely crimson, but also the skin 'puts on blush', typical characteristics of full blood oranges. Even when cultivated in this country, the ripe fruits are very sweet and have a high fructose content.

Citrus sinensis 'Doppio Sanguinello' is a hybrid cross between Citrus x meyeri and Citrus sinensis 'Sanguinello'.

The Blood Orange variety ‘Sanguinello’ has ist origins in Spain. It is slightly more compact, grows smaller and slower than other Blood Oranges. These are, however, distinct features that basically show in plantation cultivation. In container culture, these differences are often not noticeable, especially in young plants. The flowers are medium-sized (2-3 cm), white and have an intense sweet fragrance. The peel of the fruits shows a distinct reddish to purple pigmentation, which is even promoted by a drop of temperature at night during final ripening. The fruits are slightly smaller than other Blood Oranges and less round but rather oval to egg-shaped. Like other blood oranges, they are almost seedless and remain on the branches for a long time without decrease in quality, which even adds an additional decorative value to the fruiting plant.
