Description

Native to Japan, satsumas (Citrus unshiu) are assigned to the group of tangerines and clementines, with which they have much in common, but from which they are separated by subtle differences. Unlike tangerines and clementines, satsumas have broader leaves, somewhat less compact crowns and very few thorns. Its branches are often weighed down with the heavy number of fruits. The flowers are small (1-1.5 cm), very numerous and have the typical sweet-tart fragrance of tangerines. Satsumas are a bit larger than clementines. With their intense to dark orange skins, the fruits stick to the tree for a very long time, even when in late fall (October/November) they have reached full ripeness. The fruit segments are hardly connected with the peel so that satsumas can easily be peeled. Even though satsuma trees are cold-tolerant and can even tolerate short frosts, they cannot be overwintered outdoors in our country.
