White Mulberry trees (Morus alba) are less known for their fruits than for their leaves which serve as food for silkworms, and are therefore still used as "fodder trees" in India, for example. The White Mulberry grows larger than its related species Morus nigra or Morus rubra. It can reach a height of up to 20 m, however, if pruned it can be kept to 5-8 m height. On the other hand, it tolerates drought, heat and poor soils extremely well and even copes well with inner city climates. Among the three mulberry sisters, it is considered the hardiest, although its hardiness depends on the individual plant. Minus -20°C are usually no problem, but in some cases these plants have survived even lower temperatures. The name White Mulberry not only comes from its fruits, which can also turn reddish depending on exposure to sunlight, but usually remain white. The name primarily refers to the buds which are whitish. In our opinion, the taste is even sweeter than that of black mulberries: a "candy" preferably enjoyed straight from the tree. Its smooth leaves vary in shape even on one tree and range from oval with zig-zag edging to three lobed fans. Even young trees produce many fruits when propagated from cuttings as we do.
