Description

The Chusan Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) is one of the hardiest palm trees in the world. The straight and usually single trunk is covered in coarse fibrous material, which is reminiscent of hemp fibres – hence the name 'Hemp Palm'. The fir-green fronds of this robust fan palm can reach up to 1m in diameter. Chusan Palms are happy in sunny places as well as in semi-shady spots. They are an exotic eye-catcher in gardens and winter gardens. If you want to grow the Chusan Palm like a classical container plant, move it outdoors in April and bring it back into its winter-quarter in the fall (November/December). This may be a bright, unheated place in a garden shed, garage or similar space, as long as it is covered. Chusan Palms can also be wintered in a heated greenhouse or conservatory, where they do not rest. The third alternative is to plant the Chusan Palm permanently into the garden. Depending on the beginning of the frost period, tie the fronds upwards from mid to late December and wrap them with horticultural fleece – not plastic wrap! The fleece serves as protection from moisture and the winter sun, it can not and should not warm the plants. A simple fleece wrapping has proven itself many times. You may also mulch the base with straw. You should not leave Hemp Palms completely unprotected: at least there must be a wetness protection for the top of the trunk, from which the fresh fronds sprout. Otherwise, in our winters with high precipitation, the heart of the palm cannot dry out and rotting or, in combination with freezing wetness, tissue damage occurs. If this is prevented, Hemp Palms are extremely robust and undemanding permanent guests for the garden, bringing a feeling of vacation even to northern European properties.
