Oleander are very thursty and hungry plants that reward for this care with ample flower display from May to August/September. Plants that spend the winter in a bright greenhouse often show their first flowers already in April. Fertilize your Oleander once to twice a week with a liquid fertiliser from March to September and leave some rain- or tabwater in the planter when you water the plant. Oleander will tolerate a moderate amount of lime. If Oleander runs dry repeatedly it will drop many leaves and is then easily attacked by spider mites/ red spider that make white dots appear on the leaves. A continuous but sporadic drop of yellow leaves, however, is normal: this way, Oleander replaces its evergreen leaves to young leaves. Healthy, strong Oleander reliably show many flowers even in bad summers, an all-day sunny place provided. In the shade it will not flower satisfactorily. During winter, Oleander needs a cool, sunny place with temperatures below 10 °C, otherwise the risk of insect pests like scale insects will increase. Oleander tolerates moderate freeze-up. In winter you have to care for an airy place and water only directly onto the soil. Replant your Oleander every year in March/ April into a larger pot or cut two to three chocks out of the roots and replace them by fresh, high-quality potting soil. When you trimm your Oleander don’t cut all young shoots at once because there the new flower buds have started to grow the previous year. To keep Oleander compact and full of flowers cut one to three of the oldest shoots short above the ground.
