The vigorous Blue Passion Flower (Passiflora caerulea) differs from other Passion Flowers in its cold tolerance. Even long lasting sub-zero temperatures do not harm the roots, if planted in the garden and covered with a thick layer of leaves in winter. The shoots above ground die back as temperatures drop in the fall but re-sprout in April/May. The main flowering period is in the mid-summer months of July and August. If you cultivate Passiflora caerulea as pot plant and winter it in a bright room or conservatory, the bloom may last even into winter. Make sure humidity is above 60% or spray the leaves regularly. The 10 petals are light blueish, the base and tips of the corona blueish with a white center. The ’Constance Eliott’ variety is pure white except for the green filaments and the purple pistils. The leaves of both varieties are deeply lobed and five- to seven-fingered. The growth of the thin, flexible shoots is vigorous with a constant water supply and in places without too much heat. The flesh of the plum-sized, orange-yellow fruits, which ripen until fall, tastes very aromatic.
