In our country, the Crimson Bottlebrush (Callistemon citrinus) is the most well-known Callistemon species. Imagine a bottle brush cleaner and you know exactly what the flowers of this Australian shrub look like - only they are fiery red! By the hundreds, the 2 to 3 cm long stamens stand together in 10 cm long spikes on these tub plants that have been popular for centuries - and not just once a year, but up to four times: on the terrace in May and August, in winter gardens or bright living rooms with glass fronts additionally in October and February. Interesting: the seeds adhere to the branches for years and germinate in their natural habitat in Australia only after exposure to intense heat from fire. The evergreen leaves, attractively colored red when young, have a hard surface and are completely unattractive to pests, especially since they contain essential oils and exude a lemony scent. The evergreen, naturally compact growing and cold-tolerant crown can be easily trained into a spherical bush or an attractive standard or 'lollipop' single stem. There are only two conditions these robust plants require: a warm, wind-protected full sun spot and the soil should not dry out.
