Russelia equisetiformis - Firecracker Plant, Coral Plant
With finely branching stems, horsetail-like foliage and pendent clusters of tubular flowers in red or white, Firecracker Plants (Russelia equisetiformis) cascade down from columns or hanging baskets or grow as ground covers in conservatory beds.
The Firecracker Plant offers many different possible uses. On the one hand, it is an evergreen trailing plant cultivated in a pot and hanging from columns or pedestals, sprawling over borders and walls in a greenhouse or that grows as ground-cover in a sunny spot. On the other hand, as it gets older, it grows up to a bushy solitary plant with shoots growing upright as well as overhanging or that can be tied to a trellis. The leaves are slender like Common Horsetail and the flowers slim and tubular like a small Fuchsia in a red or yellowish-white dress. As a whole, they give a cascade-like or firework-like look to the plant that might be the origin of its common name.
Quality: permanent red blossom; interesting growth; various possible uses as trailing plant, ground-cover or solitary plant; small growing; evergreen
Use: in pots from April/ May outside on balcony, terrace and in the garden - during winter indoors; all-year in a heated greenhouse or room
